ECONOMICS & NETWORKS OF PARTICLE THERAPY CENTERS

Economics and networks are central to the success of particle therapy centers.

Collaborative platforms enable resource sharing, knowledge exchange, and transnational access. These networks optimize clinical operations, foster multidisciplinary research, and accelerate innovation, while evaluating cost-effectiveness, societal benefits, and long-term sustainability of proton, carbon-ion, and emerging hadrontherapy modalities.

COST-BENEFICE ANALYSIS AT CNAO

A detailed cost-benefit analysis of particle therapy infrastructures demonstrate their significant clinical, scientific, and societal value.

Activity-based costing captures personal equipment, and operational expenses across proton and carbon-ion modalities, providing a granular view of resource allocation. Benefits extend beyond patient treatment, encompassing research output, technological innovation, human capital development, and cultural impact. Expansion of capabilities - including independent proton rooms, hyperfractionation, BNCT (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) integration, and training programs - enhances both patient access and operational efficiency.

Overall, multi-disciplinary, well-managed hadrontherapy centers prove economically sustainable while fostering scientific advancement, supporting local industry, and delivering high-quality, personalized care for patients with complex or radioresistant tumors.

EUROPEAN UNION NETWORKS

European networks have played a crucial role in advancing particle therapy over the past two decades.

Initially small and focused, these collaborative platforms have expanded to include thousands of researchers, clinicians, and institutions across Europe, facilitating knowledge exchange, harmonization of clinical protocols, and training of the next generation of experts. Networks such as ENLIGHT and its successors have enabled transnational access to facilities, joint research projects, and coordinated insfrastructure development.

They support multidisciplinary collaboration across physics, biology, and clinical oncology, fostering innovations in imaging, adaptative therapy, and multi-ion treatments. Importantly, these networks also aim to expand access to particle therapy across regions with limited facilities, ensuring equitable patient care while driving technological progress and eductional initiatives across Europe and beyond.

ROUNDTABLE - COST, CARE & INNOVATION IN HADRONTHERAPY

Experts discussed the role of networks and medico-economic evaluations in particle therapy, emphasizing how collaboration improves patient recruitment, training and research impact.

They highlighted the importance of sharing knowledge through open platforms, virtual seminars, and transnational access inititatives, ensuring offecient use of facilities and promoting innovation. Economic assessments consider not only life-years gained but also quality of life, healthcare costs, and societal benefits, illustrating the broader impact of advanced therapies.

The Symposium Hadrontherapy for Life was recorded in Caen, Normandy – in collaboration with the University of Caen-Normandy, CYCLHAD, François Baclesse Cancer Center, Normandy Hadrontherapy (NHa), Région Normandie and IBA.
